Jose Cortez is one of the principal professors at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes del Peru in Lima. He is an abstract expressionist artist influenced by pre-Columbian cultures and the New York School. Within his paintings he explores gesture and mark-making along with color composition. Cortez is admired for his ability to create a unique art language of gestures and symbols that continue to mystify and inspire the viewer.
