Details: Matisse, was born in Paris, France. His parents were both artists, his father, a sculpture, and his mother a painter and ceramist. Being the grandson of the renowned Henry Matisse, Pierre grew up surrounded by the art scene of France. Growing up, Pierre was introduced to some of the most famous artists of the century: Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Fernand Leger, and of course his own grandfather Henri Matisse. Pierre helped his father in his studio, and studied painting with his mother and his grandfather. During the war years, Pierre studied at L'Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and Les Courd d'Art du Soir de la Ville De Paris. In 1924 Pierre came to New York where he bagan a distinguished career of 65 years as an art dealer. In 1931, Matisse opened his own gallery in the Fuller Building at 41 East 57th Street in New York City. , which existed until his death in 1989, became an influential part of the Modern Art movement in America. Matisse represented and exhibited many European artists and a few Americans and Canadians in New York, often for the first time.
