GOVERNOR DEWITT CLINTON HAND WRITTEN LETTER DATED 1818. LETTER APPEARS TO BE A CHARACTER REFERENCE. LETTER HAS SEVERAL FOLDS AND DISCOLORATION BUT SIGNATURE IS VERY CLEAR.
ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS LOT IS A STAMPED FIRST DAY COVER ENVELOPE DATED JULY 4, 1967 COMMEMORATING THE 150th. ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF THE ERIE CANAL BY GOVERNOR CLINTON
Dewitt Clinton (1769-1828) was born in Little Britain, New York. He was New York state senator (1798-1802), United States Senator (1802-1803), Mayor of New York (1803-1807, 1808-1810 and 1811-1815) and Governor of New York (1817-1821, 1825-1828). DeWitt had been introduced to politics when he served as secretary to his uncle, New York's first Governor, George Clinton.
